Les stèles romaines de l’Algérie antique

This book offers a comprehensive study of 266 Roman funerary and votive stelae from three major cities of ancient Algeria—Caesarea (Cherchell), Sitifis (Sétif) and Thamugadi (Timgad)—spanning from the 1st century BC to Late Antiquity. Combining iconographic, epigraphic, spatial and technical approaches, it examines the full “biography” of these monuments: their production, materials and carving techniques, original use in funerary or votive contexts, and their later reuse (spolia) in urban and defensive structures. Through detailed catalogue entries and comparative analysis, the book identifies local and regional artistic characteristics within the same province and across different provinces, while also tracing broader Mediterranean influences and the persistence of North African traditions. Particular attention is paid to the organization of workshops, the circulation of models and craftsmen, and the relationship between imagery and text. Beyond style and typology, the study explores the social dimensions revealed by the stelae: age, gender, origin, status, professions, religious identities and expressions of memory. By integrating archaeological contexts with visual and epigraphic evidence, the volume renews the understanding of figurative art and religious and funerary practices in Roman Algeria, and highlights the value of iconography as a key tool for reconstructing the societies of North Africa.

Cet ouvrage propose une étude approfondie de 266 stèles funéraires et votives romaines provenant de trois grandes cités de l’Algérie antique — Caesarea (Cherchell), Sitifis (Sétif) et Thamugadi (Timgad) — couvrant une période allant du Ier siècle av. J.-C. à l’Antiquité tardive. Croisant les approches iconographique, épigraphique, spatiale et technique, il retrace la « biographie » complète de ces monuments : leur production, les matériaux et techniques de sculpture employés, leur fonction initiale dans des contextes funéraires ou votifs, ainsi que leur remploi ultérieur (spolia) dans des structures urbaines et défensives. À travers des fiches de catalogue détaillées et une analyse comparative, l’ouvrage met en évidence des caractéristiques artistiques locales et régionales, au sein d’une même province comme entre différentes provinces, tout en soulignant les influences méditerranéennes plus larges et la permanence des traditions nord-africaines. Une attention particulière est accordée à l’organisation des ateliers, à la circulation des modèles et des artisans, ainsi qu’à l’articulation entre image et texte. Au-delà des questions stylistiques et typologiques, l’étude explore les dimensions sociales révélées par les stèles : âge, genre, origine, statut, professions, identités religieuses et expressions de la mémoire. En intégrant les contextes archéologiques aux données visuelles et épigraphiques, cet ouvrage renouvelle la compréhension de l’art figuratif ainsi que des pratiques religieuses et funéraires en Algérie romaine, et souligne la valeur de l’iconographie comme outil fondamental pour la reconstitution des sociétés de l’Afrique du Nord antique.
