Calaforno 1: L’Ipogeo e il territorio

The Hypogeum of Calaforno is one of the most intriguing structures of prehistoric Sicily, an underground sequence of 35 chambers preceded by a vestibule and a megalithic entrance, built in the Late Copper Age. The book presents the results of the investigations directed by Pietro Militello on behalf of the University of Catania inside the hypogeum between 2013-2017.

In the first section, written by Pietro Militello, a description of the hypogeum is given. Through an architectural, functional and energetics analysis of the inner part of the hypogeum and the results of archaeological soundings, a complex history of use, reuse, abandonment and changes in use (funerary, religious, residential etc.) is reconstructed, spanning almost three millennia. At the same time, the publication of other previously unknown hypogea resituates the Hypogeum from its isolation in Sicilian prehistory.

In the second section, written by the members of the research team, a detailed analysis is presented of the geology of the area, and the publication of prehistoric, protohistoric and medieval pottery recovered in the excavations, together with studies on architectural, faunal and anthropological remains. Two final chapters present a preliminary report on the work of the archaeological service of Ragusa in the outdoor area of the Hypogeum and in the wider region.

L’ipogeo di Calaforno è una delle strutture più interessanti della Sicilia preistorica. Costruito nella tarda età del Rame, è costituito da una sequenza sotterranea di 35 camere precedute da un ampio vestibolo e da un ingresso megalitico. Il libro presenta la prima analisi sistematica dell’Ipogeo, dopo la sua pubblicazione da parte di L. Guzzardi, ed i risultati delle indagini effettuate dall’Università di Catania all’interno dell’Ipogeo tra il 2013-2017.

Nella prima sezione viene fornita una analisi architettonica, funzionale ed energetica dell’Ipogeo, e, grazie ai risultati dei sondaggi archeologici, viene ricostruita una complessa storia d’uso, riuso, abbandono e rifunzionalizzazione (con destinazione ora funeraria, ora religiosa, ora residenziale, ora industriale), che abbraccia quasi tre millenni di storia. Nello stesso tempo, la pubblicazione di altri ipogei pluricellulari dal territorio toglie l’ipogeo dal suo isolamento nella preistoria siciliana.

Nella seconda sezione, vengono presentate un’analisi della geologia dell’area e la pubblicazione dei materiali rinvenuti negli scavi (ceramiche preistoriche, protostoriche e medievali, resti architettonici, faunistici e antropologici), insieme ai risultati delle analisi archeometriche. I due ultimi capitoli sono un resoconto preliminare dell’attività della Soprintendenza Archeologica di Ragusa nell’area esterna dell’ipogeo (ingresso megalitico) e nel territorio più ampio.
