Boriboi Abdullaev† investigated the site of Dzarkutan as a member of the Samarkand Institute of Archaeology's Surkhandarya expedition under the direction of Ahmadali Askarov. He defended his Ph.D. on the excavations of Necropolis 4a in 1980 (published in 1983 in Russian).
